The 2 kilometer long Champs-Elysées of Paris is an area rich in history and is a must visit for anyone heading to Paris. Known throughout the world, this fascinating avenue is located in the 8th arrondissement and runs from Place de la Concorde to Place Charles de Gaulle where one will find the Arc de Triomphe.
Some 400m north of avenue des Champs-Élysées is rue du Faubourg St-Honoré (8e), the western extension of rue St-Honoré. It has renowned couture houses, jewellers, antique shops and the 18th-century Palais de l'Élysée which is the official residence of the French president.
At the bottom of av des Champs-Élysées is a 3.6m-tall bronze statue depicting General Charles de Gaulle in full military gear ready to march down the broad avenue to the Arc de Triomphe in a liberated Paris on 26 August 1944.
What began as Marie de Medicis’ vision of a tree lined promenade in 1616 has today become a laidback meeting place for people from around the world. Set amidst old buildings, lush parks, exclusive shops, cafés, theatres and cinemas, the Champs-Elysées is an ideal place for a family day out or a romantic evening stroll.
